This route voids the scarily busy two lane, no shoulder section of Hanging Moss. Manhattan Rd. also includes a two lane section, but it has a lower speed limit and less traffic.

Years ago, I worked on a possible “Rails To Trails” project that included the City of Jackson. Using federal DOT grants, local/private participation, a nice functional inner city bike trail with connections to other bike trails like the one in Ridgeland and the Reservoir can be possible. Has the old ICG abandoned railroad tracks around the Jackson area been studied by your group?
The right of way for the rail line from Belhaven to the Resevoir has reverted back to the land owners. The idea of rails to trail there is virtually dead.
What’s wrong with reacquiring the right of way from the landowners? Rails to trails in Jackson may be more challenging but it’s not dead. This is a critical tourism initiative for Jackson and we can’t let it go without a fight.
Samuel,
I’m glad to see I’m no the only who reads my posts.
We’re definitely looking into rails to trails possibilities here in Jackson. We have a meeting next week where that will be one of the main topics. I know of a previous effort that didn’t pan out, and we’re looking to revive it if possible. The rights of way for that abandoned line may have already reverted to the land owners though.
Greg
Wish all bike riders would wear bright yellow shirts or vests to make them more visible to drivers especially on the Natchez Trace.
